PBM to miss second Sepang MotoGP test

Rabu, 19 Februari 2014

Paul Bird Motorsport will skip next week’s second Sepang MotoGP test and instead focus on developing the bike from the team’s Cumbrian base.

Having raced at Sepang in October and completed the recent opening test of 2014 at the circuit, the team felt that their time would be better spent preparing for the Qatar test and season opening grand prix.

Speaking to Crash.net, PBM technical director Phil Borley explained:

“After weighing up the pros and cons of participating in the second Sepang test we have decided not to, primarily because of the amount of preparation with the new bikes we have to complete before Qatar.

“There are also some developments we are working on and logistical challenges ahead, so our next time on track will be the Qatar test.”

Michael Laverty and new signing Broc Parkes completed 96 and 126 laps respectively of the Malaysian circuit earlier this month.

“We were pleased with the performance and feedback of both of our riders at Sepang, and we were able to confirm a good base chassis setting, as well as electronic control setting improvements and some direction for future progress, so we do not feel there would be too much to gain from returning to Sepang,” Borley added.

The PBM team will race their own PBM chassis with an Aprilia engine in the Open class and expect to have an upgraded engine from the Italian manufacturer in time for the new season.

However the upgrade would still leave the team running the same spec of powerplant that CRT champion Aleix Espargaro finished the 2013 season, fitted with the Dorna ECU.
