New Zealand rally driver Hayden Paddon has finished a creditable eighth place in his first event in a WRC car.
He and co-driver John Kennard improved one spot as gravel replaced asphalt on the final day of the Rally of Spain near Barcelona.
Paddon, 26, was given a drive in a Ford Fiesta by the Qatar M-Sport team and says he has picked up plenty for when he next gets an opportunity in the sport’s top tier.
“It has been a huge learning curve and we’ll be all the better from it next time,” he said.
“Obviously, disappointed with our times on the gravel, but with the lack of time we have had in the car and trying to get to grips with something that is so completely different, then it is looking positive for the future.”
As well as having to familiarise himself with the car and find the right set-up for his style, Paddon also went into the rally with no gravel testing.
The event was won by Sebastien Ogier, who overturned a 45sec deficit for his eighth victory of the season.
The Frenchman had already secured the driver’s title after his home rally earlier this month.
