A low mist settled over the Japanese Grand Prix venue in the morning, leading to what began as an indefinite delay to the session starting.

The fog was too thick for the medical helicopter to fly safely, and with no change in conditions heading into the afternoon, the decision was taken to abandon the day’s planned running.

MotoGP has yet to announce whether any changes to Saturday’s schedule will be possible to add additional track time.

The race is the penultimate round of the MotoGP championship, with Honda’s Spanish rookie Marc Marquez poised to take the title despite being disqualified from the previous race in Australia.

The 20-year-old has an 18-point lead over reigning champion and compatriot Jorge Lorenzo, who rides for Yamaha.
