The Bundesliga weekend was highlighted by Borussia Dortmund’s emphatic win in the Revierderby over Schalke. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen continued their winning ways, while Borussia Mönchengladbach showed once again that they’re not going to fade into mid-table obscurity.
Friday, October 25
Stuttgart 1-1 Nürnberg
Vedad Ibisevic scored 3rd minute on a penalty to give Stuttgart the early lead. Nürnberg pegged them back three minutes later through Josip Drmic. New coach Gertjan Verbeek will be proud that his side held on for a point against Stuttgart and give him something to build upon for next weekend.
Saturday, October 26
Bayern Munich 3-2 Hertha Berlin
Hertha Berlin battled hard against a tired-looking Bayern Munich, but the Bavarians were able to hold out for the 3-1 victory. Adrian Ramos put Hertha up in the 4th minute with a header. Bayern lost Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos within minutes of each in the first half hour due to groin injuries, but neither player is expected to miss any time. Mario Mandzukic and Mario Götze were the subs, and the two headed Bayern past Hertha on the day. All three goals scored by Bayern were on headers, and I have to believe that allowed Götze to score a header on you is embarrassing for a defender.
Schalke 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
BVB snapped a two match losing streak to Schalke with a 3-1 victory in the Revierderby on Saturday afternoon. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang latched on to a ball from Marco Reus and beat Timo Hildebrand for the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Kevin Prince Boateng had the opportunity to pull Schalke level with a penalty after Christian Fuchs was fouled by Neven Subotic. However, Roman Weidenfeller was up to the challenge and denied the spot kick to keep BVB on top. Just after halftime, Nuri Sahin made it 2-0 with a fantastic strike after Henrikh Mkhitaryan bossed the midfield for BVB once again. Max Meyer was brought on by Jens Keller, and the young player made an immediate impact. Adam Szalai’s shot was blocked by Weidenfeller, but Meyer was on hand to knock in the rebound to pull Schalke right back into the match. Unfortunately for Schalke, Mkhitaryan picked up the ball near his own penalty area and brought it up the field before finding Jakub Blaszczykowski who smashed his shot past Hildebrand to give BVB the 3-1 scoreline and victory.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Augsburg
Augsburg took a shock early lead against Bayer Leverkusen through Andre Hahn. Simon Rolfes brought Leverkusen level just ten minutes later. The match wore on and on, and it appeared that Augsburg were going to steal a point on the road against Leverkusen. Unfortunately for the visitors, Emre Can headed home the game winner from a Robbie Kruse cross to keep Leverkusen in third place, just one point behind first place Bayern.
Hannover 1-4 Hoffenheim
Hannover had an absolute disaster at home on Saturday after giving up four goals and receiving two red cards. The match became interesting in the first ten minutes after Christian Schulz fouled Anthony Modeste inside the penalty area. Sejad Salihovic converted the penalty to give Hoffenheim the lead. Mame Biram Diouf was booked for dissent in arguing the penalty, and then he was sent off in the 12th minute for what the referee judged to be simulation. Kai Herdling made it 2-0 in the 18th minute. Hannover pulled a goal back in the 56th minute when Salif Sane headed in Leonardo Bittencourt’s free kick. However, Hoffenheim got their two goal lead back a few minutes later through Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian would grab another goal before the day was finished, while Hannover saw Marcelo sent off to complete an awful afternoon.
Mainz 2-0 Eintracht Braunschweig
Braunschweig remains bottom of the table after a brace from Shinji Okazaki pushed Mainz to a 2-0 victory. The win is the first for Mainz since August 24th. Whoa. Thomas Tuchel needs to put things together.
Wolfsburg 3-0 Werder Bremen
The Dieter Hecking revolution continues at Wolfsburg. They’re now in sixth place in the table and are showing signs of improvement every week. Maximilian Arnold gave Wolfsburg the lead in the 7th minute. Werder stayed in the match until late in the second half when Ivica Olic made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. Ivan Perisic put the finishing touches on the match with a goal in the dying minutes.
Sunday, October 27
Freiburg 0-3 Hamburg
Freiburg started well against Hamburg on Sunday, but a Maximilian Beister goal before halftime started their downfall. Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Rafael Van der Vaart grabbed goals in the second half to keep Freiburg winless on the season.
Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Gladbach hammered Frankfurt on Sunday and moved back into the fourth Champions League spot awarded to the Bundesliga. Juan Arango opened the scoring, but Stefan Aigner quickly equalized for the visitors. However, Oscar Wendt put Gladbach back on top in the 18th minute to make it 2-1. It was mostly one way traffic in the second half with Patrick Herrmann scoring a goal and assisting on Raffael’s goal as the hosts eased to victory.
