The recent Spanish Football League (LFP) Assembly covered a wide array of topics needing to be addressed to improve and keep the organisation moving forward and the primary topic was the issue of ‘talent drain’ in La Liga and how they propose to put a stop to it.
You would be hard pressed to argue against the statement that Spanish football produces the best youth players in Europe and with that comes clubs from abroad looking for the next Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, Ignasi Miquel, Dani Pacheco, Ruben Rochina, Suso or Rodrigo Moreno.
However, LFP president, Javier Tebas is determined to prevent the ‘talent drain’ from La Liga with the help of club directors and their academies.
“We spoke about an issue that we’re discussing with clubs and directors of football, which concerns academies and players under 16. We’re trying to work out how to protect them and encourage clubs to keep nurturing these academies, because they are extremely important for the future.
“We’ve set 1st March [2014] as a deadline to decide on what sort of regulations we want to introduce in professional football to protect these types of players, who are under 16 and therefore are not tied to their clubs.”
As of right now, players under the age of 16 are not allowed to sign professional contracts, which makes the prospect of a big club coming with a lucrative contract over staying with their modest Spanish club a no-brainer.
However, despite Tebas’ desire to have the system be universally adopted throughout Spain, he will need to find a away to implement it, and enforce the laws to clubs abroad, something his current proposal is unable to do as according to Spanish sports daily, Marca, it is little more than a gentleman’s agreement.
