Barcelona target La Liga top spot ahead of Manchester City visit

Jumat, 07 Maret 2014

Barcelona could be boosted by a return to the top of La Liga just three days before they host Manchester City in the Champions League with a win away to Valladolid on Saturday.

The Catalans trail leaders Real Madrid by a point, but with Los Blancos not in action until Sunday evening when they host Levante, Barca can retake top spot for at least 24 hours.

The Spanish champions have had another unsettling week off the field as captain Carles Puyol announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Marc Bartra is one of those who stands to benefit from Puyol’s departure as the 23-year-old will move up the pecking order in central defence.

However, he insisted he will miss the guidance Puyol has given him as he has come through the ranks at the Camp Nou.

“He has helped me a lot on the field. After every attack he gives me advice and after each match or training session too. He has been fundamental, not just with me but the whole team,” he said.

Bartra is expected to start on Saturday as Gerard Pique remains sidelined by a calf injury.

And Bartra is determined to make the most of any opportunity he is handed by Barca boss Gerardo Martino.

“I am very aware of where I am, which is the first team at Barcelona where almost nobody is guaranteed to start.

“This year I have lived through both situations of playing very little and then playing a lot of games in a row.

“With the coach, none of the 20 of us in the first team know whether we are going to start or be on the sidelines. He has managed things very well because every week you think you have a chance to start.”

Despite holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg of their last 16 tie against City, Martino is expected to continue rotating his squad with the English side’s visit in mind as Pedro Rodriguez and Andres Iniesta could come into the side that started the 4-1 win over Almeria last weekend.

Even if Barca do emerge victorious at the Jose Zorilla, Madrid can retake top spot when Levante visit the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Los Blancos remain in the fight for titles on three fronts with just over two months of the season remaining and captain Iker Casillas admits they are targeting a first treble in the club’s history come the end of the campaign.

“Right now we are in a privileged position. We are outright leaders in the league, in the final of the Cup and, baring a disaster, we will be in the quarter-finals of the Champions League,” he told the club’s website.

Marcelo and Dani Carvajal are expected to retake their places at full-back after making a positive impression as substitutes in Real’s 2-2 draw away to local rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Otherwise, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is likely to name an unchanged side as his team don’t return to Champions League action until next week.

That draw at the Vicente Calderon last weekend left Atletico still three points adrift of Real in third place.

Diego Simeone’s men have the toughest test of the title contenders on paper this weekend as they travel to Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Los Rojiblancos will also have to do without top-scorer Diego Costa as he is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Real last time out.

Ogier wins Guanajuato SSS

Jumat, 07 Maret 2014

Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier has taken the early lead on Rally Mexico following the Guanajuatito Street Stage on Thursday evening.

Ogier completed the short 1.01km test, which was lined by over 50,000 fans and which requires drivers to negotiate winding alleyways and mine shafts of the silver-mining city – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 52.9 seconds. That put him 0.3 seconds up on Ott Tanak, who was a fantastic second in his Drive DMACK Ford Fiesta R5: “The real start is tomorrow,” Ogier told the official WRC site. “It is always slippery here and you have to be careful. No risk at all tonight.”

Andreas Mikkelsen was third in his VW Motorsport II Polo R WRC, followed by Citroen’s Kris Meeke and current championship leader, Jari-Matti Latvala. Thierry Neuville, Mads Ostberg, Mikko Hirvonen, Robert Kubica and Lorenzo Bertelli filled positions 6 through to 10.

Chris Atkinson’s debut event with Hyundai meanwhile got off to a poor start, with the Aussie’s i20 WRC stopping in the stage. He lost over 20 seconds: “I don’t know what happened. But we re-set the car and it started again,” he explained.

Rally Mexico now starts ‘proper’ on Friday, with ten stages on the bill covering a competitive distance of 148.62 kilometres.

SS2, the 9.88 km Los Mexicanos 1 test, is due to start at 08.32 hours local time [14.32 hours UK time, i.e. a 6 hour time difference].

Rally Mexico: Latvala fastest in shakedown

Kamis, 06 Maret 2014

Volkswagen’s Jari-Matti Latvala posted the quickest time this morning in the shakedown for Rally Mexico, the latest round in the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship.

Latvala, who won the last event in Sweden and who currently heads the Drivers’ Championship after the opening two events, completed the 6.27 km Llani Grande test in 3 minutes 53.6 seconds, putting him 1.1 seconds up on Citroen’s Kris Meeke.

“Generally I feel in the groove with the car,” Latvala told the official WRC site. “Tyre wear was OK and this was a good way to get started. The stage had a narrow, technical section and a high speed part so it was a good sample of the actual rally, good preparation.”

Defending champion Sebastien Ogier meanwhile came in third in his Polo R WRC, with VW third driver, Andreas Mikkelsen fourth, followed by Mads Ostberg and Mikko Hirvonen, the latter leading the way for M-Sport. Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville, former F1 man Robert Kubica, Chris Atkinson and Benito Guerra rounded out the top ten.

The opening test is now due to take place this evening at 20.09 hours local time, when competitors will tackle the short 1.01km Street Stage in Gunajuato. The event then starts ‘proper’ on Friday with ten special stages on the bill and around 149 competitive kilometres.

Relegation nerves on the rise in the Bundesliga while Bayern impervious at the top

Kamis, 06 Maret 2014

BERLIN – The Bundesliga is all but decided.

Bayern Munich, which visits Wolfsburg on Saturday, is playing in a league of its own with Borussia Dortmund 20 points off the pace.

Eight teams are fighting against relegation, with three six-pointers taking place Saturday between Stuttgart and Eintracht Braunschweig, Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt, and Nuremberg and Werder Bremen.

Dortmund will visit another relegation candidate, Freiburg, on Sunday.

Here are five things to know about this weekend’s matches:

___

HAMBURG HEX

Hamburg coach Mirko Slomka is struggling to get 11 players together for his side’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

The club’s injury worries were exacerbated by the international break. Defender Marcell Jansen has been ruled out for several weeks after tearing a ligament in his left ankle in Germany’s 1-0 win over Chile, while striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga returned from his first national call-up before Wednesday’s game with muscle problems.

Slomka also has injury concerns over Rafael van der Vaart (flu), Milan Badelj (broken hand), Hakan Calhanoglu, Petr Jiracek and Ivo Ilicevic (all thigh strains), Lasse Sobiech (concussion) and Lam Zhi Gin (groin problems). Replacement goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny and midfielder Kerem Demirbay have not yet recovered from hamstring injuries. Maximilian Beister and Slobodan Rajkovic are both ruled out to the end of the season with cruciate ligament injuries.

Hamburg snapped its seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in Slomka’s debut, but lost the northern derby to Werder Bremen last weekend and remains in the relegation playoff place.

“It’s about pure survival,” Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler said. “In the coming two home games we must mix aggression with playing football again.”

___

LAST CHANCE

Thomas Schneider has one game to save his job.

His Stuttgart side has lost eight in a row and another defeat against Eintracht Braunschweig would see the bottom side draw level.

Stuttgart’s board of management decided to stick with the 41-year-old Schneider on Tuesday.

“The advisory committee is 100 per cent behind this decision,” said Stuttgart president Bernd Wahler, despite media reports suggesting Thorsten Fink, Zvonimir Soldo, Krasimir Balakov, Ralf Rangnick and Huub Stevens were all being considered as possible replacements.

Braunschweig’s lowest point in the season came in the 4-0 home loss to Stuttgart in September, but the promoted side has recovered from the worst ever start to a Bundesliga season and still believes it can avoid the drop.

“It did look a lot worse,” said Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht, who recently extended his contract to 2017. “Stuttgart as a direct rival (for relegation) — for it to have come so far was unthinkable after the reverse fixture.”

___

SCHALKE SHOCK

Schalke hopes to recover from what Kevin-Prince Boateng called its “horror week” when its hosts Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Humiliating defeats at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League (6-1) and then at Bayern Munich last weekend (5-1) have brought Schalke back to earth after the side started the year with four straight wins.

“It doesn’t get any worse. That was highly embarrassing. We lined up like a school team tactically, beyond bad,” Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes said.

Schalke coach Jens Keller needs to reshuffle his back line with Felipe Santana and Atsuto Uchida (both hamstring) and Kyriakos Papadopoulos (suspended) all out.

___

LEVERKUSEN ALARM

Bayer Leverkusen is in freefall after five successive defeats across all competitions and the club relinquished second place to Dortmund by losing 1-0 at home to Mainz last week.

“There’s a big concern that we’ll miss all our targets,” Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller said after his side’s eighth loss in 10 games.

Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia has been unable to halt the team’s slide after an embarrassing German Cup exit to second-division club Kaiserslautern and a 4-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The Finn will need to adjust at Hannover on Saturday with midfielder Stefan Reinartz and Omer Toprak both suspended.

___

BAYERN SUPREME

The title is just a matter of time for Bayern, which is on a record 15-game winning run and unbeaten in a record 48 games.

“Of course we’re going to be champions,” Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos said.

Bayern’s 20-point lead over Dortmund after 23 games is also a Bundesliga record. Kroos told Munich newspaper TZ that Bayern was effectively using the Bundesliga to stay sharp for the Champions League.

“We still want to take each game seriously so we don’t get into any rut with a view to the Champions League. Indeed it’s difficult to flip the switch again,” Kroos said.

Wolfsburg is trying to recover after last Sunday’s 6-2 rout at Hoffenheim. Midfielder Christian Traesch was sent off and Luiz Gustavo also picked up a suspension, ruling the Brazilian out against his former club.

“We’re not going into the game to wait and see how good the opponent is,” Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost said. “Why do you necessarily have to lose against Bayern Munich? We’re Wolfsburg. We’re playing at home. Bayern are strong, but we also have our qualities.”

Premier League: How the table looks with only English scorers

Kamis, 06 Maret 2014

Chelsea may be top of the Premier League with 10 fixtures remaining for the majority of teams, but the west London club would have to relinquish their position of supremacy were goals scored by Englishman the only ones to count.

Opta Sports have produced a graphic of how the table would look with just English goalscorers, and Chelsea plummet from first to sixth in the altered standings.

Liverpool are the team to replace Chelsea at the Premier League’s summit, with numerous goals from Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson propelling Brendan Rodgers’ side into league winning position.

Liverpool and other clubs such as Monaco who are not playing in Europe this season will not have to pass UEFA’s break-even rule in order to take part in the next Champions League campaign, it has been confirmed.

Only the 237 clubs who took part in this season’s Champions League and Europa League are currently being assessed, UEFA has confirmed.

UEFA has revealed 76 of these are being investigated and face sanctions this summer – including possible disqualification from next season’s competitions – if they fail to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP).

Clubs such as Liverpool and Monaco who have not been in Europe face no threat of sanctions this summer for failing to break even.

They would be assessed next autumn – along with all the other clubs in UEFA competitions next season – with any sanctions applicable in 2015.

Liverpool this week announced losses of £49.8million up to the end of May 2013, and a further £40.5m over the previous 10 months leading to some concern over whether the club would comply with UEFA’s FFP rules.

A UEFA spokesman confirmed to Press Association Sport that clubs not involved in Europe this season will not be assessed until next season.

Liverpool remain hopeful that they will comply despite their losses. The club may be able to write off a loan made by owners Fenway Sports Group to repay a £38million loan taken out to develop stadium plans by the former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

What may come: Man City, who have lost £149million in the past two seasons, have much to fear

The autumn financial review by UEFA will look at clubs’ finances over the 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, plus a estimate of the position over the two years to come.

That means the impact of the new bumper Premier League TV deal would be reflected in the English clubs’ accounts.

Manchester City, who have lost £149million in the past two seasons, have the most to fear among Premier League clubs, while on the continent Paris St Germain are also in the spotlight.

All Man city have to do is borrow the money from the owners then have the loan written off.If Liverpool can do this it makes a mockery of any rules.Real Madrid and Barcelona are of course exempt from these rules.

Celtic look towards the Premier League as UEFA secretary opens floor to …

Rabu, 05 Maret 2014

By

Gary Keown

Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino offered Celtic a chink of light as they bid to burrow a future escape route out of Scottish football into the lucrative market of the English Premier League.

Responding to Fergus McCann’s suggestion that the club should now be permitted to move south of the border, Infantino declared that his organisation is ‘open to discussing everything’.

In Barcelona to see Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell installed on the executive board of the influential European Club Association, Infantino pointed to the three-year experiment currently taking place in women’s football where leading sides from Belgium and Holland play against each other in a newly-formed championship.

And he revealed that major discussions will be held about the potential benefit of higher-profile mergers when the success of that programme has been properly evaluated.

Celtic and Rangers have been lobbying for entry to England for years – and hard on the heels of Neil Lennon insisting he would love to manage the Scottish champions there, McCann has stated they should be allowed entry to an expanded English set-up which would triple their wealth as a business.

Speaking exclusively to Sportsmail at the conclusion of the ECA’s General Meeting, Infantino insisted that UEFA – while currently maintaining their opposition to cross-border leagues at the highest level – are prepared to talk about the possibility of Scotland’s major clubs playing in England in future.

‘I don’t know what will happen and there are other discussions going on in Scotland at the moment about independence in any case,’ said Infantino. ‘One part of the country wants independence and another wants to join England.

‘There is an experiment, a test, going on in the BeNe League in women’s football with Belgium and the Netherlands. This has gone on for a year and we will take a look into that after the second year.

There will be discussions going on with all stakeholders. Football is in constant development and we are open to discussing everything.’

In addition to McCann marking the 20th anniversary of his involvement at Celtic by demanding the club be given a passport couth, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho recently said he would welcome both the Parkhead club and Rangers to England’s top flight.

However, other English clubs have been less than enthusiastic, anxious about the prospect of losing their own place at the lucrative top table.

Despite admitting that UEFA are open to discussing radical changes, Infantino insisted nothing will happen in the short-term.

‘I have only heard of this now and there has been no change in the position of UEFA,’ he said. ‘As matters stand today, this is not a possibility.’

Meanwhile, Lawwell said only time will tell if his new role at the heart of European football can help Celtic maximise their potential elsewhere.

Insisting no progress has been made in trying to push though an invitation south or even rekindle the idea of a northern European league, he said: ‘There is nothing really happening at the moment on that. We will see if this helps.

‘In the last 15 to 20 years the media values in the big nations have gone beyond anybody’s predictions. That has created a great gap between the top and the bottom. Therefore we need to find ways of closing that gap.

‘I have been at Celtic for over 10 years now and think my own experience of being at a big club in a small market will help as I have seen things from both sides. That is what I hope to bring to the table.’

The FA will never allow Celtic to join the English leagues because of the fair few IRA/republican supporters that follows them round, im not saying what they sing is right or wrong but I think the FA will see it as risky when they come up against teams like Chelsea, West Ham and god forbid they get Millwall in one of the English cup competitions. The FA will not want to put themselves in a position where one day these clubs will meet and they will have to answer for the trouble that follows.

If Celtic join the epl it will draw a line under their Scottish football history, thereby leaving Rangers as the still the most successful club in Scottish football history.

Since the rangers you speak of were liquidated in 2012 the clubs that will still form the Scottish league would eventually overtake the dead club.

This wouldn’t benefit Celtic at all, they would lose all their champions league money. There’s 7/8 teams now in the premier league who could possibly qualify for the champions league next season. And I just don’t think Celtic would be good enough to compete week in week out. If the Scots vote for independence this will also become even harder for them to move south.

Celtic want to parachute straight into the EPL –

Erm!…No they don’t. They have said no such thing.

Don’t let a little thing like the truth get in the way of your prejudice though, Doc…

Celtic have talked many times about the benefits of them playing in the EPL, and a few yeras ago that was Peter Lawwell’s aim. I am not prejudiced – you seem to be alluding to me being a Rangers fan – not so – have watched Celtic since 1981 and season ticket holder under MON and GS – but Manchester City fan since 1966

Let them start in the lowest of all divisions and work their way up and then if they are good enough let them in like everyone else. Otherwise tell them to stay where they are!!!

The first photo is not Fergus, its an ex Chairman Brian Quinn, dont think the FA will sanction the move.

We don’t want them either. Maybe they can ask whether they can join the French league.

There is no such thing as the ”Old Firm”. That tag died when RangersFC1872-2012 died.
