The special test has been arranged to avoid a repeat of last year’s Australian Grand Prix tyre problems for the MotoGP and Moto2 classes.
The new high-grip asphalt saw October’s premier class race divided into two halves by a compulsory mid-race bike swap, to ease the strain on the tyres, while the Moto2 distance was significantly shortened.
In addition to making their final machinery preparations for the new season, the select group of MotoGP and Moto2 teams present this week will thus evaluate a range of tyre solutions from Bridgestone and Dunlop respectively.
Fresh from their announcement to move from the Factory to Open class for 2014, the Ducati Team will be fielding Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow, with Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa also on track.
Pedrosa’s team-mate and reigning world champion Marc Marquez is missing the test due to the broken leg suffered in a recent dirt track training accident – however Marquez may yet be replaced by an alternative rider for the test.
In Moto2, Marc VDS (Mika Kallio and Tito Rabat – Kalex chassis) and Mapfre Aspar (Nico Terol and Jordi Torres – Suter chassis) will be in attendance at the 4.4km anti-clockwise circuit.
Track action will take place between 9:30am and 5:30pm local time on each of the three days.
The MotoGP teams not testing in Australia will hold their final pre-season track outing at Qatar from March 7-9, prior to the season-opening event at the same Losail venue from March 20-23.
The final Moto2 pre-season test will be held at Jerez from March 11-13.
