Mourinho’s charges are top of the standings, a point ahead of the Gunners who are in second place, but the Blues boss maintains his charges are underdogs.

However, Wenger criticised the Portuguese mentor’s statement as a “fear to fail” – but Mourinho bit back, branding the Frenchman “a specialist in failure” as he has not delivered a trophy to north London since 2005.

“Am I afraid of failure? What is that? I believe at the end of the day I’ll be seen as the ‘impolite guy’, the one who’s aggressive in his words. But I’m not,” the Chelsea manager said.

“He says we are afraid of failing – failing at what? If you don’t win a title in one year is that failure? If you don’t win a title in two years is that failure?

“I have lots of respect for him, and he’s a great manager, but when he speaks about failure, failure is not to win a title in seven or eight years in a big club – that’s failure,” he added.

“He’s a specialist in failure,” continued Mourinho. “If I do that in Chelsea, eight years, I leave and don’t come back.”
