Pep Guardiola believes it would be foolish to write Manchester City out of this season’s Champions League, despite the Premier League side having been outclassed by his Bayern Munich.

The reigning European champions looked imperious as they romped to a 3-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, with Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben all getting in on the action.

Alvaro Negredo did manage to pull one back for the Citizens before Jerome Boateng saw red for the visitors in the closing stages, but the Bundesliga champions were able to prevent any late comeback as they dented City’s hopes of finally progressing past the group phase, having been knocked out as this stage in the last two campaigns.

The result left the Bavarians three points clear at the top of Group D, with City and CSKA Moscow level in second and scheduled to face each other in the next group match.

Guardiola believes Manuel Pellegrini’s men are most definitely not out of the running for a place in the last-16, though, saying: “I said it yesterday and nothing changed my mind – they (Manchester City) are going to qualify and will be a tough opponent for the next round, but I can only talk about my team and what they did.”

The former Barcelona boss added: “I am respectful when you play against Manchester City with these unbelievable players.

“We played better, we won, but the football is special.

“I am lucky to be here to train these players.

“It is nice for the team to come to this country, where they love football so much, and play like we did today.”
