The UEFA Champions League group stage may be only two matchweeks old, but already a number of players have caught the eye in Europe’s premier club competition. Who has impressed you most?
Perhaps one of the least surprising sights of the campaign so far is that of Real Madrid CF forward Cristiano Ronaldo atop the goalscoring charts. The Portuguese international has already found the net five times and helped his team to two comfortable wins. Though FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is second with three goals, there has been no shortage of outstanding displays from less-heralded names.
Julian Draxler, for example, has found the net in each of FC Schalke 04′s two victories to date. Also in Group E, another German international, André Schürrle, produced one of the most tireless performances of the group stage so far as Chelsea FC won 4-0 at FC Steaua Bucureşti on matchday two.
How about the likes of Arsenal FC, who have been in scintillating form at home and in Europe? Has marquee summer signing Mesut Özil lived up to expectations? Or perhaps the resurgent Aaron Ramsey, who is surely in the form of his life?
The holders, FC Bayern München, have also caused a stir, most particularly with a consummate 3-1 win at Manchester City FC. Captain Philipp Lahm has been hugely influential in an unfamiliar midfield role earmarked for him by new coach Josep Guardiola.
That is little more than a handful of examples of clubs and players who have come to the fore so far in this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. Who has stood out most for you? Leave your comments in the box at the foot of the page.
