Report: English Premier League game coming to Charlotte

Senin, 03 Februari 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte will host two of the highest-scoring English Premier League soccer teams in an exhibition match in August, according to media reports.

The Daily Mirror and World Soccer Talk both report that Liverpool and Manchester City would play in Charlotte at 6 p.m. on August 2nd as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup, an exhibition tournament that takes place after the World Cup but before the start of the EPL’s regular season.

The official announcement of the lineup, dates and cities for the tournament is set for Tuesday morning in Miami.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority says nothing is set just yet. Laura Hill, the CRVA’s director of communications, says her organization has been working to land an EPL soccer game in Charlotte, but that the teams and date have not been set.

The CRVA says the game at Bank of America Stadium would be rent-free.

As part of the deal that sent $85.7 million in city money to the Carolina Panthers for Bank of America Stadium renovations and other expenses, the City of Charlotte gets to use the stadium, rent-free, four days a year. The EPL matchup would be the first rent-free event.

Charlotte has hosted several major soccer games in the past.

A matchup in 2010 between Mexico and Iceland drew more than 63,000 fans to Bank of America Stadium, and more than 46,000 fans came out to watch a Gold Cup match between Costa Rica and El Salvador in 2011.
