The Derby della Capitale with Lazio as hosts hadn’t ended goalless since 1996, followed by eight home wins, four victories for Roma and three draws at 3-3, 2-2 and 1-1. The overall record with the blue and white hosts in Serie A is 23 wins each and 25 draws.
Roma failed to score for only the third time this season, the others being a 3-0 defeat to Juventus and 0-0 with Cagliari on November 25. They netted 45 goals in the other 20 Serie A games. Rudi Garcia’s run of six consecutive victories in all competition ground to a halt, but the Giallorossi also interrupted two straight ‘away’ derby defeats.
The Biancocelesti remain unbeaten in the League since Edy Reja replaced Vladimir Petkovic, earning three victories and as many stalemates. Lazio didn’t get a shot on target in either of the derbies this season. It’s only the third time this term the Aquile fired blanks at the Olimpico.
Juventus had not conceded any headed goals in the League this season, but let in two against Verona. Luca Toni is a specialist with five nodded in this term, on a par with Fernando Llorente. Toni now has a career 120 Serie A goals, 11 in the current campaign, while it was Juanito Gomez Taleb’s fourth.
For the second time this season, Antonio Conte’s men squandered a 2-0 lead, as they also lost 4-2 at Fiorentina in October. The Bianconeri have now won just one of their last four competitive matches on top of two draws and a defeat. Between League and Coppa Italia, Juve are without a victory in three away tests.
The Old Lady set a new club record by finding the net for 36 rounds in a row. Carlos Tevez celebrated his first Serie A brace and made Verona his favourite targets, having already scored against them earlier this season.
Verona hadn’t shared the spoils on home turf yet this season, winning eight and losing three. Between Serie A and B, Hellas have the upper hand in this fixture, beating Juve nine times, losing eight and drawing nine.
Juve and Napoli have scored 25 goals in the first half this season, more than any other club.
Napoli had not done the top flight ‘double’ over Milan since 1985-86. The Rossoneri have been unable to beat the Azzurri since 2011, drawing three of their next six meetings and conceding eight in their last three visits to the San Paolo. Gonzalo Higuain became the first Partenopei player to score in both season meetings with the Rossoneri since Maurizio Domizzi in 2007-08. Including the Champions League with Real Madrid, Higuain has netted in his last three games against Milan.
Clarence Seedorf suffered his first career Serie A defeat after two wins and a draw. Riccardo Montolivo marked his 300th top flight game.
Adel Taarabt scored on his Serie A debut with only his fifth touch in this tournament and is the 16th Milan player to score this season. The last man to mark his maiden appearance for the club with a goal was Andrea Poli in a 2-1 defeat to Verona on August 24 2013.
Rafa Benitez’s boys registered their first win since the midway stage of the season, ending a run of two draws and a defeat. Gokhan Inler has netted 14 Serie A goals, two of them past Milan.
Mario Balotelli is no fan of facing Napoli, as he has lost all five matches played against them with the jerseys of Inter, Manchester City and Milan. Pepe Reina also became the first goalkeeper to save his competitive penalty.
Inter finally registered their first victory of 2014, having failed to notch up three points between Serie A and the Coppa Italia since beating Milan on December 22 with just two draws and four losses. Sassuolo have one point from the last 10 rounds, but finally made their debut top flight trip to San Siro.
Walter Samuel hadn’t scored in Serie A since the Milan Derby on October 7 2012, also a 1-0 result, but took his career total to 22. All three of Inter’s goals in the last six rounds were netted by defenders.
Juventus rattled the woodwork 13 times this term, while Torino hit the frame of the goal on 12 occasions.
Rafal Wolski marked his first Serie A strike at the sixth appearance. Josip Ilicic has scored 22 Serie A goals in his career, but 10 of them came in the opening half-hour. Fiorentina ended their streak of one draw from three games between League and Coppa Italia. Carlos Carmona celebrated his Serie A century.
Atalanta haven’t conquered the Stadio Franchi since a 1-0 result in 1993, followed by six draws and eight losses between Serie A and B. The Viola have won eight of their last nine official home ties, drawing the other. Conversely, Atalanta earned just one point in their nine competitive away matches.
Bologna had not earned a Serie A victory away to Torino since December 1980 when the result was also 2-1, followed by four draws and five defeats. The Granata lost only once at home this season, 1-0 to Juventus on September 29, and hadn’t even conceded in Turin for 271 minutes of football. The Rossoblu celebrated their first win of 2014 after three draws from five attempts. Jonathan Cristaldo bagged a brace after one goal in his other 15 Serie A appearances.
Ciro Immobile has netted seven goals in as many Serie A appearances. Matteo Darmian had played every minute of the campaign before he was substituted against Bologna.
Parma matched the club record by going 11 rounds unbeaten, which had been set in 1995-96. There have been three goalless draws at the Tardini this season against Chievo, Cagliari and Catania. The Elefantini notched up a third consecutive stalemate, two of them 0-0 and the other 3-3. Their last Serie A away victory was in Parma on February 24 2013, followed by five points from 18 games. That 2-1 result also remains their only win at the Tardini between Serie A and B along with seven defeats and seven draws.
Antonio Di Natale has rediscovered his form, scoring four in his last five games between Serie A and the Coppa Italia. It’s his 183rd in Serie A, now just one shy of Gabriel Batistuta’s tally, but he hadn’t scored from open play since a 1-1 with Bologna on September 15 2013. Emmanuel Badu had never netted in Serie A before this season, but now has three goals to his name.
For the first time all season, Udinese have won two on the bounce in the top flight. Including the Coppa, the Friulani are on a run of three consecutive victories. Chievo have lost their last four visits to Udine. Eugenio Corini’s men scraped just three draws from the last nine games in all competition.
Genoa earned their first away win of 2014 after one draw and a defeat. Their last away victory over Livorno was 1-0 in 1969 (albeit played on neutral turf in Florence) followed by three draws and three losses. Livorno had gone unbeaten for two rounds, picking up four points and scoring six goals, but suffered their 14th defeat of the season. Luca Antonelli set a new personal best with his second goal of the campaign, five in his career.
Sampdoria are unbeaten at Marassi with Sinisa Mihajlovic as Coach, picking up five victories (including the Genoa Derby as the away team) and three draws. Cagliari hadn’t lost this top flight fixture since a 4-1 hammering in 1997, followed by seven draws and two losses. Daniele Gastaldello got his second goal of the season, his 10th in Serie A overall.
The Sardinians have managed only nine stalemates and eight defeats since their last Serie A away victory, 2-0 at Pescara on February 17 2013, and have scored only four goals on their travels this season. They haven’t netted away from home for seven and a half hours of football.
