ATHENS — Greece’s Acropolis Rally has been left off the 2014 World Rally Championship calendar, organizers revealed on Friday.
This is the third time that 60-year-old Greek rally has been left out of the WRC competition.
In 1974 the Acropolis Rally was not included due to the energy crisis and again in 2010 when motorsport’s governing body the FIA decided to leave out the Greek event.
“The organising committee of the Acropolis Rally will do whatever possible to return to the 2015 calendar, exploiting our one year absence to build up our case,” the announcement said.
“The early warning signs were visible in mid-summer with FIA and the promoter of the institution concerned of the economic situation in Greece and if the Acropolis Rally would meet the steadily increasing economic demands of WRC,” the announcement continued.
The 13-round 2014 championship was decided Friday at a meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Like this year the 2014 season kicks off in mid-January in Monte Carlo and finishes with the Rally of Great Britain in November.
The Rally of Poland, which included a day of competition in bordering Lithuania, will take the place of the Acropolis Rally.
