American Exports: Stoke City’s Geoff Cameron nets first English Premier League …

Senin, 23 September 2013

AMSTERDAM – A pair of Americans rang the bell overseas on Sunday, with Stoke City right back Geoff Cameron bagging his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 losing cause at Arsenal.

Hitting on 26 minutes to temporarily knot the match, the US handyman followed up a Marko Arnautović shot off the post to find net from the top of the area. Despite a solid all-around effort from Cameron, the 10th-place Potters eventually fell to their first defeat since opening day.

Meanwhile, Brad Friedel watched from the away dugout as Tottenham reached second place with a last-gasp 1-0 win at Cardiff City.

Over in Austria, Terrence Boyd continued his torrid form with the insurance tally in Rapid Vienna’s 2-1 win over visiting SV Reid.

With the hosts already up one in the 16th minute, the forward rose high to bury a corner kick header for his fifth strike in six league outings this season. Boyd would later see yellow as Rapid tentatively climbed to within three points of the top spot.

Turning to the Bundesliga, John Anthony Brooks was removed midway through the first half of Hertha Berlin’s 1-1 draw at Freiburg with a suspected elbow dislocation.

The USMNT prodigy departed after a nasty 20th minute collision with Gelson Fernandes and will have an exam early in the week. The result kept 10th-place Hertha winless in three.

Next door in Ligue 1, Alejandro Bedoya worked 79 minutes as Nantes dropped a 2-1 decision at Lyon. Now winless in their last 10 league matches on the road, the Canaries slipped to 12th place.

In the Eredivisie, Aron Jóhannsson had a quiet afternoon as ninth-place AZ Alkmaar suffered a 3-0 defeat at NAC Breda. The loss dropped the Kaasboeren back to break even through seven games.

Across the border in Belgium’s Jupiler League, Sacha Kljestan went the distance in Anderlecht 4-0 derby humbling at Club Brugge. The three-peat seekers fell nine points off the top with the loss.

Conor O’Brien and Odense BK blew a halftime lead to fall 3-1 at holders FC Copenhagen. The American picked up a yellow card during his 73-minute shift in the visitors’ third straight loss.

And without the still injured Michael Bradley, AS Roma maintained the top spot in the Italian Serie A with its fourth win in four league games to start the year, defeating rivals Lazio 2-0 in the Roman derby.
