Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp issued warning over …

Selasa, 31 Desember 2013

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has warned coach Jurgen Klopp a fourth place finish this season would be unacceptable.

Klopp’s men finished runners-up to Bayern Munich in both the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League last term but a spate of injuries has had an alarming impact on their progress this season.

With five first-team regulars sidelined, Dortmund have slipped to fourth in the German top flight and narrowly sneaked their way into the Champions League knockout stages in a dramatic final group game.

“At the moment fourth place is acceptable, but we would not be satisfied with a fourth place finish at Borussia Dortmund. That is not our objective.”

Hans-Joachim Watzke

On the domestic front, Dortmund are winless in their last three outings, losing two and drawing one, and Watzke is keeping a close eye on their progess.

“At the moment fourth place is acceptable, but we would not be satisfied with a fourth place finish at Borussia Dortmund,” he told Suddeutsche Zeitung magazine. “That is not our objective.

“We want to qualify directly for the Champions League, ideally, as this is not out of our reach and of course I expect us to play better in the second half of the season.”

Any hope of wrestling the Bundesliga title from Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich has seemingly evaporated, with the leaders already 12 points clear of Dortmund at the top of the table.

Dortmund get their Bundesliga campaign back under way on January 25 when Augsburg visit the Westfalenstadion.

Alonso out to end Champions League heartache

Selasa, 31 Desember 2013

The Real Madrid midfielder is determined to help the club achieve ‘La Decima’ this season to atone for a string of semi-final failures

Xabi Alonso insists that Real Madrid must reach the Champions League final this season after a heartbreaking hat-trick of near misses.

The Blancos have been eliminated in the last four of Europe’s premier club competition for the last three campaigns, at the hands of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Those defeats have elongated Real’s quest for a 10th European Cup success but Alonso says the painful memories will act as an incentive for Carlo Ancelotti’s men to reach this season’s final in Lisbon on May 24.

“In recent years, playing for Real Madrid, being knocked out of the semi-finals of the Champions League was very painful,” the Spanish international told Club del Deportista

“That is why our aim is to reach the final this year and put those defeats behind us.”

Real have began this season’s competition in fine form, winning five of their six Champions League Group B games to set up a last 16 clash with German outfit Schalke.

English Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur to take on Seattle Sounders …

Selasa, 31 Desember 2013

Tottenham Hotspur are coming back to America.

The English Premier League club will suit up against the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire in July 2014, the clubs announced on Monday, giving Stateside fans the third look in five years at one of the top teams in England.

Tottenham will take on Seattle on July 19 at CenturyLink Field and then the Fire at Toyota Park on July 26.

Spurs currently sit seventh in the Barclays Premier League, level with Manchester United and three points off fourth position, with just one loss in the past seven league outings. After finishing fifth in the league table last season, Spurs qualified for the UEFA Europa League, winning its group with a perfect record to advance to the Round of 32.

“Tottenham Hotspur has established themselves as one of the top teams in arguably the toughest league in the world,” Sounders owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer said in a statement. “We are proud to have them be a part of this year’s friendly and will continue to strive to bring the strongest competition to CenturyLink Field.”

Said Fire chief operating officer Atul Khosla: “In Chicago, the Fire proudly represents the global game. Making the investment to bring a club like Spurs to Toyota Park demonstrates our continued commitment to facilitating the growth of soccer. We welcome the opportunity to showcase Chicago Fire soccer to a broader base of soccer fans, not only here at home, but also those from around the globe.”

The North London side, which has won the FA Cup eight times and the UEFA Cup twice, currently has a roster that boasts US national team legend Brad Friedel, English internationals Jermain Defoe, Andros Townsend and Kyle Walker, Brazilian internationals Paulinho and Sandro, Spanish international striker Roberto Soldado and French international captain Hugo Lloris.

“Preseason preparations are always key ahead of a new campaign,” Spurs manager Tim Sherwood said in a statement. “We all know that the US has first-class facilities, while Major League Soccer is growing each year. The MLS opposition we face will be in the middle of their seasons and playing in their home stadiums so we can expect strong tests from both Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire. The Club is rightfully proud of its large and growing fan base in the States and we look forward to meeting with as many of our loyal fans from across the country as we can.”

The Seattle match is part of the Sounders FC full 18-match season ticket membership. Fans can also guarantee seats for the Tottenham Hotspur match by purchasing a half-season ticket membership prior to the public on-sale of individual tickets on March 10.

Tickets will be available to Fire season ticket holders beginning Jan. 8. The general public sale date is Jan. 24, with group sales beginning Jan. 27.

World Rally 2013 Driver of the Year vote: 1st

Selasa, 31 Desember 2013

Your Top 10 World Rally Drivers of the Year 2013:

1: Robert Kubica

Nationality: Polish

Team: Lotos Dynamic Rally Team / Abu Dhabi Citroen Total WRT

Car: Citroen DS3 RRC (7 events) / Citroen DS3 WRC (1 event only)

Championship position: 1st in WRC2 / 13th in WRC

Points: 143 points in WRC2 / 18 points in WRC (average tally per event: 20.43 points in WRC2)

Events: 8 (out of 13) – 7 in WRC2, 1 in WRC

Wins: 5 in WRC2 / 0 in WRC

Podiums: 6 in WRC2 in total / 0 in WRC

Points finishes: 7 in WRC2

Stage wins: 57 in WRC2 / 0 in WRC

Power Stage wins: 0

There is only one word to describe the way Robert Kubica performed in 2013 – and that is ‘impressive’. The former F1 ace, who of course suffered that career-changing accident on the Ronde di Andora rally back in 2011, took the WRC2 title in style, claiming his fifth class win in succession in Spain. It followed victories in France, Germany, Sardinia and Greece, as well as a second place finish in Finland. He also scored first time out in the WRC and was sixth in class in Portugal.

Granted his outing in a Citroen DS3 WRC on Wales Rally GB didn’t go to plan. However it was hardly the ideal event to get his first taste of a current generation WRC car, and a late switch of co-driver, also meant the Pole was up against it.

His four outings in the ERC weren’t that great either – he only finished one of them when he was sixth on SATA Rallye Açores – but having said that he did still take 18 ERC stage wins and his overall form was enough to secure him a full-time drive at the top level in 2014, as next season he will compete with M-Sport in a Lotos-supported Ford Fiesta RS WRC. He clearly impressed you too, and you gave him an unbeatable mark of 9.66 out of ten, easily giving him the top-spot in your 2013 World Rally Driver of the Year vote.
