Eugene Laverty ‘wants MotoGP with Aprilia’

Kamis, 19 September 2013

Two Laverty brothers could be in MotoGP next season with World Superbike title contender Eugene hoping to return to grand prix.

After claiming a double victory in Sunday’s Turkish round for the factory Aprilia WSBK team, Eugene – whose brother Michael races in MotoGP with PBM – revealed he is ‘on the lookout for a new job’ for 2014.

Laverty has since told BBC Sport: “I have not got a deal for next year but, after the two wins in Istanbul, I am definitely in a better position.

“I would like to be in MotoGP with Aprilia because I have been with them for two years now and I know the bike and the electronics well, which is important.”

Aprilia is increasing its MotoGP effort for 2014, with departing Ducati star Nicky Hayden tipped to lead the Aspar-run project. A pneumatic-valve engine and seamless shift gearbox is planned for Aprilia’s ART bike, which is based on the RSV4 Superbike raced by the likes of Laverty and team-mate Sylvain Guintoli in WSBK.

Aprilia may even step-up from a privateer to factory MotoGP entry, which would allow the continued use of its own ECU software, but less race fuel and engine changes.

Present Aspar rider Aleix Espargaro seems to have his sights set on switching to Forward Yamaha for 2014 – probably alongside a retained Colin Edwards – while current team-mate Randy de Puniet may step back from Aspar to concentrate on Suzuki MotoGP test riding duties.

That scenario could provide an Aprilia MotoGP opportunity for Laverty, who spent two seasons on uncompetitive machinery in the 250cc grand prix class, from 2007-2008, before rebuilding his career in World Supersport and then Superbike.
