Dec. 16 (UPI) –The English Premier League continued to be a close affairs as league leaders Arsenal lost and the teams immediately behind them closed the gap.

Arsenal went down 3-6 to Manchester City in a high scoring affairs that saw Arsenal lose center back Laurent Koscienly to injury. The defender’s absence could spell trouble as he has been an integral part of Arsenal’s sturdy defense so far this season. The big win means Manchester City will stay in 4th place but are only three points off the top. Arsenal is still in first place ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool by two points.


Chelsea snuck by Crystal Palace on the weekend in a 2-1 win. The win was much needed after a couple of recent slip ups by the Blues, who sit in third place. Crystal Palace is in 18th place.


Liverpool demolished Tottenham 5-0 to remain second ahead of Chelsea on goal differential. The large defeat was the second of a similar scoreline, after conceding six goals against Manchester City recently. Tottenham’s manager Andre Villas-Boas said he would not quit the post though even though Tottenham, once joint-top, is now in seventh place. The game drew more plaudits for Luis Suarez who has been on scintillating form this season and is expected to be subject to big transfer offers in January.


Manchester United returned to winning ways beating Aston Villa convincingly 3-0. The Red Devils are in 8th place and Aston Villa is in 11th.


Norwich City drew 1-1 with Swansea City. Cardiff City won 1-0 against West Bromwich. Everton continued their surprising form with a 4-1 win at Fulham. Newcastle United and Southampton drew 1-1. West Ham United and Sunderland played to a 0-0 draw, as did Hull and Stoke City.
