In a period of economic uncertainty, Italian sides would do well to look for the bargain signing here and there. Whether it be a newly-promoted team with high aspirations or one of the titans of Calcio looking to get the edge over their rivals.
For the purpose of this article we have included players owned solely by a club and not on loan or in a co-ownership deal.
Some of those listed may be expensive compared to others but this is all put into the perspective of what is cheap for a particular club.
Here are our top ten cheap transfers of 2013.
10) Hugo Campagnaro – Inter
Newly-appointed Inter coach Walter Mazzarri was able to bring supporters a gift when Hugo Campagnaro arrived on a free transfer from Napoli. Arguably their best defender last season, the experienced Argentinian will join compatriot Walter Samuel and Cristian Chivu in safeguarding Inter’s goal.
Under Andrea Stramaccioni, the Inter back-line suffered partly due to the 3-man defence experimentation but also because of numerous changes throughout the season.
Campagnaro will bring consistency to a team that desperately needs it whilst also supporting younger members like Juan Jesus and Andrea Ranocchia. It helps that Mazzarri has coached the 33 year-old before, and even more so that he will play quite comfortably next to two other centre-backs.
Campagnaro may not stand out as a world-beating acquisition, but he is certainly a smart signing for a side looking to build on what it already has.
