Assen voted most entertaining 2013 MotoGP race

Selasa, 10 Desember 2013

Crash.net viewers gave this year’s MotoGP races an average score of 6.6 out of 10 for entertainment, up from an average of 5.6 the previous season.

Polls were set-up after each of the 18 grands prix, asking viewers to: “Tell us exactly how entertaining you, the watching fans, thought it was by awarding a mark out of 10.”

A score of 1 meant a ‘dull’ race and 10 ‘fantastic’.

The most entertaining 2013 MotoGP was deemed to be the Dutch TT, which scored an average of 9.0 out of 10. The Assen race saw Valentino Rossi move through the field from fourth on the grid to claim his first race win since 2010.

During the fight for second, Dani Pedrosa was overtaken by both Marc Marquez and Cal Crutchlow. Crutchlow, who started the race from a first ever MotoGP pole, pushed Marquez to the end, taking evasive action to avoid hitting the rear of the Spaniard’s Repsol Honda on the final lap.

Meanwhile Jorge Lorenzo rode to a stunning fifth place after dramatically breaking his collarbone, then flying back to Spain for surgery, on the opening day of the grand prix! Fans were also kept entertained by close racing further down the order, with seventh to eleventh places covered by under three seconds. 18th to 22nd places were covered by less than two seconds.

The highest rated 2012 race had been the wet French MotoGP, with an average of 8.4 out of 10. However, in addition to Assen, three other events beat that score this year.

A close second best to Assen was the Qatar season opener, which received 8.9 out of 10. Losail ended with victory for Lorenzo and Rossi runner-up on his Yamaha return after narrowly holding off Marquez, making his MotoGP debut.

Joint third for entertainment value went to the Silverstone and Valencia rounds, with 8.6 out of 10.

Silverstone saw Lorenzo snatch a tiny 0.081s victory over Marquez after swapping places on the final lap. Lorenzo also won the tense Valencia season finale – after brutally defending his lead while backing up the field in the early laps to try and bridge the points gap to eventual champion Marquez.

At the other end of the scale the Catalan Grand Prix received the lowest score, just 3.7 out of 10. Lorenzo took a home win by 1.7s at the event, but the top three riders – Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Marquez – held the same positions from start to finish.

Next dullest were the two Italian-based rounds at Mugello (4.2 out of 10) and Misano (4.4). As with Catalunya, the common theme was the absence of overtaking at the front, with Lorenzo leading both events from lights to flag.

The most tedious 2012 race had been the Indianapolis Grand Prix, with an average of 3.0 out of 10. Indianapolis improved to 6.3 this year.
