Zurich – It was not destined to be for FC Bayern München flier Franck Ribery as he was edged out in the 2013 vote for the prestigious FIFA Ballon d’Or by Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
The France international, 30, was on a three-man shortlist alongside Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who had dominated the stage the past four years.
Seven other awards were up for grabs, with former FC Bayern head coach Jupp Heynckes named World Coach of the Year and three members of his 2013 treble-winning side making the FIFPro World XI team of the year.
