High-scoring Manchester City moved into the English Premier League lead, scoring four times in the second half to rout Tottenham 5-1 Wednesday night.
Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany scored for City (17-4-2), which moved one point ahead of Arsenal (16-3-4) and three in front of Chelsea (15-3-5), which was held to a 0-0 tie at home by West Ham.
City has 68 goals in the league this season with 15 games remaining, two goals more than it scored all of last season.
Also, Aston Villa and U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan defeated West Brom 4-3, and Adam Johnson scored in the first half to give Sunderland a 1-0 win over Stoke and lift his team out of the relegation zone for the first time since August. American forward Jozy Altidore drew three yellow cards for Sunderland.
– Barcelona captain Carles Puyol scored his 17th career goal in a 5-1 win over Levante that gained a berth in the Copa del Rey semifinals on 9-2 aggregate.
– Thiago Alcantara scored with a scissor kick in injury time, giving Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Stuggart that opened a 13-point lead in the Bundesliga.
– Gonzalo Higuain scored in the 82nd minute, and Napoli beat defending champion Lazio 1-0 to advance to an Italian Cup semifinal against Roma.
– The Los Angeles Galaxy will become the first team in Major League Soccer to operate a lower-division farm club. The Galaxy said it will create an LA Galaxy II that will compete in the United Soccer Leagues’ Professional Division.
Like the Galaxy, the second-division team will play its home games at the StubHub Center.
– Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden is training with the U.S. national team for the first time since tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament during the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on July 28.

Rams fire defensive coordinator Walton
The St. Louis Rams fired defensive coordinator Tim Walton after finishing in the middle of the pack in his one season.
Coach Jeff Fisher, who said after the season ended that he didn’t anticipate any coaching changes, announced the move and wished Walton well. Walton spent four years as the secondary coach in Detroit before he was hired last year by the Rams.
The Rams were third in the NFL with 53 sacks and finished with the 15th overall defense, allowing 345 yards per game. They were 13th in points allowed (22.8). The team finished 7-9, but was just 1-5 against the rest of the rugged NFC West.
Tennis: Top-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia maintained her dominance over Daniela Hantuchova, thrashing the Slovak player 6-0, 6-1 to reach the Open GDF Suez quarterfinals in Paris.
The four-time Grand Slam champion has beaten Hantuchova nine straight times.
Fourth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany and Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also reached the last eight.
– Rafael Nadal doesn’t expect to miss any tournaments as a result of the back injury that contributed to his loss in the Australian Open final.
A statement from the world’s top-ranked player says he will have another medical exam Monday, and still plans to play in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Indian Wells and Miami.
