Serie A is almost back after a two week hiatius and we enter 2014 with renewed hope that Italian football is amongst the most entertaining and competitive in the world.
While there may be no Lionel Messis or Cristiano Ronaldos strutting their stuff in the peninsula, there are a plethora of players who are just as important to their clubs, so without further ado here are the 10 best of 2013.
The Top 10 list includes players who featured in Serie A for the entire 2013 calendar year. Thus, players who left Serie A this past summer – Edinson Cavani – or were signed during the summer transfer window – Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuian or Kevin Strootman – were excluded from the list.
10) Rodrigo Palacio – Inter
When Palacio signed for Inter in June 2012, few could have imagined the impact he’d have on the club or how a then 30-year old striker who’d had a successful, if not overly impressive run at Genoa, would enjoy great success at one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
Purchased for €10.5 million and pressed into service by a long term injury to fellow Argentine Diego Milito, all Palacio has done is led the Nerazzurri in scoring since arriving in Milan. Palacio has scored 34 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions for Inter and his form has caught the eye of Argentine national manager Alejandro Sabella who capped the player five times in 2013. Palacio made some scattered national team appearances in his career but had never previously been recalled to the Albiceleste with such frequency.
The Argentine’s production resulted in Inter’s younger and more celebrated strikers, Mauro Icardi and Ishak Belfodil, battling for minutes on the substitutes bench while Palacio has shouldered the bulk of the workload for manager Walter Mazzari.
Palacio’s backheel winning goal in the last Milan derby was the cherry on top of for the striker in what has been a renaissance year for the diminutive striker.
